About us

Like a charity walkathon, Step Up for Democracy automates donations to your favorite cause every day that you hit your step goal (either 5,000 or 10,000 steps).

There are 3 components to our app’s success:

Behavior

One is the behavioral economics effect. You get friends, family, and others to sponsor you. They get daily notices when you hit your goal—so as to encourage you. And they also get notified when you don’t—so as to shame you. Thus you have extra motivation to walk: stay healthy, raise funds, don’t let down your friends.

Network

The second component is the network effect. Everyone you ask to sponsor learns about the app and will be encouraged to participate and find their own sponsors. Unlike a charity walk in a specific location, anyone can do this anywhere.

Gamification

The third component is the gamification. We have various leader boards. Who has the most sponsors, who has walked the most steps, raised the most money, has the best success rate. People compete to be at the top of the list. (At some point, we will give prizes to the top performers.)

This project is a collaboration of Barry Nalebuff, Andrew Kostka, Sophie Spiegelberger, Peter Kostka, and the Momentum team.
